Edmonton’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had no career NHL fights and Vancouver’s Dan Hamhuis hadn’t fought since 2010.
But with fewer designated fighters in the league, fights sometimes will occur between unlikely combatants.
So when Hamhuis flattened Nugent-Hopkins with a hard check – a clean one, the Oilers player said – Nugent-Hopkins got up and challenged Hamhuis.
It took 17 seconds for the first punch to be thrown, and the more-experienced Hamhuis (four previous fights) eventually took him down.
“It took us both a while to figure out if were really serious about it, but once we did, it was a pretty good fight,” Hamhuis said after the game.
