I totally get it: When dressing for frigid temperatures, fashion takes a backseat to function and warmth. However, according to our council of up-and-coming style bloggers, some sartorial missteps are downright criminal. From UGG boots gone wrong to socks with sandals (a hideous year-round issue!), wintertime fashion blunders are everywhere. Here are some quick fixes.
The crime: Wearing a casual overcoat with dressy clothes
Lilah Ramzi, left, knows a thing or two about galas. As a former Metropolitan Museum of Art social media correspondent and the dynamic persona behind Part Nouveau, she’s seen her fair share of black-tie outfits. Unfortunately, she’s also seen her fair share of fashion faux pas. “I find it most unfortunate when ladies step out in their evening best wrapped up in a casual overcoat. Your outerwear should not be an afterthought!” |
The solution: “Unless you’re going for the ultra-cool-girl pairing of a ball gown and biker jacket, find a glamorous coat reserved for those black-tie events,” Lilah says.

Editor’s tip: If you want to take more of a risk and have fun with it, snag an unexpected cover-up that shows both personality and intent.

The crime: Pairing UGG boots with the wrong outfit
Crystal Hill Taylor, left, says there’s a right way and a wrong way to rock your UGG boots. The young, vintage-loving mom chronicles her adventures in toddler-dressing, home decor and covet-worthy accessories at Billie Jean. “Usually [the college girl] uniform consists of a big oversize pocket T-shirt with Nike shorts and whatever shoes,” Crystal says. “As soon as it gets even just a little cold outside, college girls think, ‘Omg, UGG boots!’ So they alternate between UGGs with Nike shorts and UGGs with yoga pants in the wintertime.” |
The solution: Taylor has a knack for making everything look luxurious. The secret, she says, is in the styling: “There’s nothing wrong with UGG boots; in fact, I love them! I wear them in Colorado when I travel there for Christmas (not with leggings, of course), and I just bought my 3-year-old a pair. But there’s a cute way to wear them and a horrid way to wear them.”

Editor’s tips: We can all agree that shorts with UGGs are never okay, but here are a few occasions that totally warrant the notoriously cozy footwear.
