NEW YORK - Wednesday night's 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles eliminated the New York Yankees from playoff contention. The Yankees' elimination means that Thursday night's game at Yankee Stadium will be the last home game of Derek Jeter's career.
As Jeter's 20th and final season in the major leagues comes to a close, fans of baseball have come together to say farewell to one of the most well-respected athletes in recent history. Fans across the country greeted Jeter with standing ovations while home teams presented him with congratulatory retirement gifts ranging from cowboy boots to a paddle board.
Cardinals fans said farewell to Jeter earlier this season on May 28 when the Yankees came to town for the first time since 2005. Before the game, Cardinal's legend Ozzie Smith presented Jeter with Stan Musial cufflinks and a $10,000 donation to his Turn 2 Foundation on behalf of the Cardinal's organization.
One thing is for sure, the standing ovation Jeter will receive Thursday at Yankee Stadium will be the longest and the loudest he has seen this season.
Since Jeter announced his retirement in February, Yankee fans have been trying to get tickets to his final home game, and following the Yankee's elimination from post-season contention, prices have continued to rise. As of Thursday morning, tickets for Thursday night's game from the Yankee Ticket Exchange were going for as much as $4,600.
And as if Derek Jeter's final appearance was not upsetting enough for Yankee fans, the game faces the threat of delay or even cancellation as the Bronx is expecting rain throughout the day and into the evening.
Derek Jeter's last home game is set to begin at 6:05 p.m. (CDT) and will air on the MLB Network.
